How It Works

altitude = distance × tan(angle)
Step 1
Measure Distance
Stand a known distance away from the launch site. Use a measuring tape or count paces.
Step 2
Read the Inclinometer
Aim your inclinometer at the rocket at its highest point and read the angle of elevation in degrees.
Step 3
Apply Trigonometry
The rocket, launch site, and you form a right triangle. Tangent connects the opposite side (altitude) to the adjacent side (distance).
Step 4
Calculate!
Multiply your distance by the tangent of the angle. The result is how high the rocket flew above the launch site.
